Back Pain Q & A
What causes back pain?

There are a variety of reasons you may be experiencing back pain. Back pain, in general, refers to pain in your lower back, upper back, or middle back, or along the course of the sciatic nerve and may be the result of muscular problems, degenerative disc disease, arthritis, or an injury. Acute pain comes on suddenly and lasts less than six weeks and is often due to a fall, heavy lifting, or muscle strain.

Chronic back pain, however, sometimes develops without a specific cause and lasts more than three months. It may indicate a more serious underlying condition, too. Some reasons you may have either acute or chronic back pain include:

  • Bulging or ruptured discs in your spine
  • A degenerative condition like osteoarthritis
  • Spinal stenosis, a narrowing of the space around your spinal cord
  • Skeletal irregularities like scoliosis
  • Muscle or ligament strain from repeated or awkward movement
  • Osteoporosis
  • Sciatica
  • Spondylolisthesis, or a slipped vertebra that pinches a nerve
  • Traumatic injury such as from a car accident
  • Infections or tumors
  • Fibromyalgia

Additionally, both men and women may feel back pain as a result of kidney stones or abdominal issues, and women often have back pain related to endometriosis or other reproductive system problems.

Am I at risk for back pain?

While anyone can develop back pain as a result of an injury or a pre-existing musculoskeletal condition, other factors that may put you at higher risk for back pain include:

  • Sedentary lifestyle and lack of exercise
  • Excess weight or obesity
  • Age
  • Genetics
  • Pregnancy
  • Smoking
  • Occupational hazards or work injuries
  • Psychological conditions like depression

Those who overdo it on the weekends, the so-called “weekend warriors” who are sedentary most of the time but exercise extensively on the weekend, are more prone to back pain than those who are consistently physically active. Moderate physical activity like low-impact aerobic exercise can keep your spine healthy and help minimize your chances of developing chronic back pain.

How does a chiropractor treat back pain?

Chiropractic adjustments are beneficial to realigning your spine and addressing chronic pain in your back. Your chiropractor first conducts a physical exam and other diagnostic testing so they can accurately diagnose and treat your back pain accordingly. Your individualized rehabilitation plan may include:

  • Physical therapy
  • Massage therapy
  • Manual chiropractic adjustments
  • Electrical stimulation
  • Traction
  • Ultrasound technology
  • Posture, positioning body mechanics
